A diva of lyric singing and human rights

10th Anniversary: Barbara Hendricks

Barbara Hendricks, one of the world´s most outstanding lyric sopranos sang the premiere of "The Coronation of Poppea" by Monteverdi at the San Francisco Opera House in 1972. Her international career was boosted by performances with some of the world´s most renown opera companies. Her opera repertoire features more than twenty titles as well as American comedies, French melodies and negro spirituals. She has sung oratorios with some of the world´s best conductors such as Leonard Bernstein, Zubin Metha, George Solti, Claudio Abbado or Herbert Von Karajan.

 

A tireless fighter in the advocacy of human rights and a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. In 1986 the French government made Hendricks a "Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres" and in 1992 she was awarded the rank of "Chevalier de la Légion d´Honneur" by President Francois Mitterrand himself. In 2000 she received the Prince of Asturias Foundation Award for her advocacy of human rights and artistic contributions towards the cultural heritage of mankind. She is also a member of the International Tribunal for Children´s Rights.
